Have you found your dream boat? Congratulations! But before finalizing the purchase, it’s wise to carry out a pre-purchase survey. This ensures the vessel is in good technical condition and helps you avoid unpleasant surprises.
As a certified marine expert and yacht surveyor, I inspect the entire vessel together with you. Immediately after the inspection, I will discuss the findings with you and provide a comprehensive survey report, including clear photos and thermal images of key components such as the engine. Based on this report, you’ll gain a detailed understanding of the boat’s condition and—if necessary—have grounds to renegotiate the purchase price.
What Does a Pre-Purchase Boat Survey Involve?
During the boat survey, I thoroughly inspect all essential components of the vessel, including:
Moisture measurement (osmosis)
Steel thickness measurements
Inspection of keel and keel attachment
Examination of rudder, propeller shaft, or saildrive
Condition of paint system and hull preservation
Paint system and hull-to-deck connection
Standing and running rigging
Deck fittings, mast, boom, and anchor
Steering system and bilge
Interior joinery and sails
Engine and propulsion system
Fuel system and tanks
Electrical installations
Navigation equipment
Freshwater tank and waste water system
Gas system and sanitation
Safety equipment on board
The inspection of the hull below the waterline is carried out on land (dry), while the engine and sailing tests are conducted under way. A full pre-purchase survey typically takes one day. For larger or more complex vessels (>16 meters), the inspection may take longer.
With years of experience as a yacht surveyor and technical specialist, I offer you an independent, thorough, and reliable survey. Your investment deserves certainty – and that starts with a professional pre-purchase survey.
If possible, please indicate the type of vessel, length, year of construction, place of inspection and desired inspection date.
