Preparing an offshore passage starts with the right preparation. The ship, the equipment, the plan, safety,… everything has to be in order. From my own experience, I know that this is an intensive process in which many choices have to be made. Here I can play an advisory role regarding all matters relating to the boat, but also, for example, insurance, education, renting out the house… etc.
For long crossings, shoreside support is an extra safeguard. From day to day, I follow the boat and the weather systems. Via SSB or satellite phone, I report what the waypoint is for the next 24 hours and any particularities in the weather.
For repairs abroad, or even at sea, diagnosing and finding the right parts is a challenge. Remote advice is then the solution. Due to my broad knowledge regarding all systems on board, I can think along and analyse what the problem is and what solutions are feasible. I can also take care of arranging and getting new parts on site.
